1. WTO terminology resourcesWhat for? Have you ever needed to find out quickly how to translate correctly into French or Spanish the name of a GATT or WTO body, committee or agreement? You don't know the technical name for a particular product or substance? WTO terminology resources provide a quick and easy means of identifying general and technical terminology.What's available? The Trilingual Glossary of WTO key terminology (c.a. 30,000 terms) offer an amalgam of existing collections of terminology relating to the trade in goods and services, trade negotiations, intellectual property and related economic and legal matters. Note for the translators. All WTO and external glossaries are available to the translators through the Translation Assistance System (TAS). This link takes you to the WTO official terminology database web interface, called
“WTOTERM”, where you can search the official WTO terminology in the three
working languages of the organization. The database is updated once a month. 1.2. Trade Policy Reviews and Accessions glossaries Search in the special Trade Policy Review and Accessions glossaries for country-specific
terms, using IsysWeb. Searches can be performed in English, French or Spanish. 2. External terminology resourcesWhat's available? More than 300 external glossaries are available on line on the WTO Intranet. These are grouped by subject category, according to the OECD Macrothesaurus. Most of these glossaries are also available in printed form at the LSD Reference Library (room 2048).2.1. Search external glossaries Search in all 300 of the external glossaries at the same time for specific terms, using
IsysWeb. Searches can be performed in English, French or Spanish. 2.2. Browse external glossaries Navigate the whole collection of glossaries by subject category. 3. Translation aidsWhat for? Translation aids are designed to help translators in their daily work, ranging from on-line glossaries to sophisticated retrieval systems.What's available? The Translation Assistance System (TAS) is the tool by excellence for the translators and their principal source of terminological data. Next in the list is the Documents online for Translators (with a special interface allowing parallel display of documents in two languages) that can be used for sophisticated and/or predefined searches. Last but not least, a wide range of terminology and documentation resources available on the web have been selected and bookmarked to help users finding the type of information they need. 3.1 Translation Assistance System (TAS) The TAS is used by all translators in the WTO, both permanent and temporary. A portable version of the TAS has been developed as well for the external translators working off the WTO premises. The TAS assists translators with their work through two main functions: a) identification of terms for which a translation already exists in a WTO official document or in a glossary available on the local area network; b) display of reference material prepared by the Translation Support Unit. Thanks to a "text-synchronization" technology, documents in source and target languages can be displayed in parallel with full paragraph synchronization. The TAS is installed on each translator's computer.
3.2. Documents Online for Translators (DOT) Documents Online contains all WTO documentation from 1995 onwards and is updated daily. It also contains selected material for the period 1986-1994, principally Uruguay Round documents and a very small number of GATT documents. Its search features are quite sophisticated, allowing not only full-text searches but also searches by date, title, subject, etc. Documents Online for Translators is a special version of Documents Online allowing a bilingual synchronization of documents retrieved. It was originally designed for external translators and is not intended to replace the TAS or the TASportable, but rather to be used as a complementary facility.
